How we can find hope (and good people) everywhere
Hi Reader,
Times have been feeling a bit heavy.
Bad news is everywhere, prices keep going up, mental wellbeing seems to be going down, and in the middle of it all we’re just trying to make sense of things and live our lives as best we can.
It’s easy to feel there’s no hope, or no good people left out there.
But then I think of this quote:
Yesterday, my husband and I travelled to Italy for our holiday, bikes packed and ready to go.
A 2am wake-up, bus, train, airport, flight to Milan, underground, another train, and finally a bus – all while carrying heavy backpacks and bulky bike cases.
And of course, things didn’t go smoothly!
Our 3am bus drove straight past us, meaning a cold 3-mile walk in the middle of the night if we wanted to catch our train on time. We laughed, tripped a few times, and made the best of it.
Then our train had to change route and was delayed. But there were helpers: a train worker guiding passengers to the next connection, a kind woman grabbing the end of my bike case as we rushed downstairs between platforms, and passengers stepping in to help a mum flying alone to Africa with her toddler and three suitcases. We all helped.
On the plane, a young woman terrified of flying was in tears – and again, helpers were there.
Finally, in a town by the lake just off Milan, the bus confusion continued: we missed one bus due to conflicting information, another driver kindly dropped us partway without charging us, and a lady at a flower shop reassured us our next bus would stop there, even if the information on the board said otherwise. When it did, that driver let us ride for free because we didn't have any cash on us. All in the cold, pouring rain.
And somehow, none of it dampened our spirits (got the pun?) – not the bus driving past us at 3am, not the rush between trains, not the nearly 10k walk with all our luggage.
Small things, I get it. But isn't life made up of small things, moments that can tip a day one way or the other?
It's the everyday helpers that make a difference.
These are the ones we're looking for.
And they are out there – sometimes it takes a little effort to notice them, but believe me, there're there. And perhaps that helper is also you!
With positivity (an a sore back and hips),
Lucy
